Sincere Support, is today celebrating after being awarded National Lottery funding over the next four years to assist its work supporting local parents and families with sick children in hospital or who have sadly been bereaved. Based in Alsing Road, Sheffield we will use the money to practically support families at their darkest times and increase training for staff and volunteers
Sincere Support has been running since 1994 and this year celebrates its 25th anniversary year. It was founded by Beverley Lister with just a pencil and a piece of paper after the death of her son Jody, through heart disease and the long illness of her daughter Laura, born with benign tumours on her vocal chords. She realised through her own experiences there was little support provided for local families in similar situations as her own at their time of great need.
We can now operate 24/7, 52 weeks/year and can provide practical help and assistance such as transport, laundry, advice, increase training for staff and volunteers and be a respite place for recovery periods when the child is in hospital or has been bereaved. Whilst it is the darkest of times this support can help relieve the strains and stresses at this time, enabling the parent/family to focus on what is most important - their child.
The new funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK, will see this support expand, this means the number of people able to receive the support will increase into the hundreds.
At the same time Sincere Support will be able to press on campaigning and fundraising for parents and families to have the support when needed. Families can meet at our headquarters and share experiences which in turn will enable others in similar situations deal with their traumas.
Bev Lister, founder of Sincere Support says: “I am delighted that the National Lottery Community Fund has recognised the work of Sincere Support in this way after 25 years. Now thanks to the National Lottery players we will be able to press on with our plans to broaden the services we offer to the parents and families with sick children in hospital or who have sadly been bereaved.”This is important because it helps them build relationships with others facing similar challenges and to create “their own tomorrows”
